The sixth edition of the leading international contemporary art fair is sponsored by Deutsche Bank and takes place in London from 16-19 October 2008.

World’s top contemporary art galleries
151 of the world’s most exciting contemporary art galleries, representing 27 countries, will present new work by over 1,000 artists at Frieze Art Fair. 2008 will see 11 galleries exhibiting at Frieze Art Fair for the first time, including Juliètte Jongma from Amsterdam, Long March Space, Beijing, Mary Mary, Glasgow and Vermelho, Sao Paulo.

Taking place in the beautiful setting of Regent’s Park in a large temporary structure of over 200,000 square foot, Frieze Art Fair 2008 is designed by renowned architects
Caruso St John.

Four galleries – Annet Gelink, Hauser & Wirth, Taka Ishii and Timothy Taylor have all employed architects to design their stands. Each year the fair’s organisers invite two spaces from developing centres of art to the fair, in 2008 they are Appetite from Buenos Aires and PiST from Istanbul.

Frieze Projects
Eleven artists have been commissioned to create site-specific work for Frieze Art Fair 2008. This year’s Frieze Projects engage directly with the ecology of the fair and its surroundings. Working closely with Caruso St. John, Jeppe Hein has drawn together the artificial construction of the fair with the natural surroundings of the park in an installation of subtly animated trees outside the entrance to the fair. Norma Jeane will present three transparent booths for visitors of the fair to smoke in. Each smoker will be part of the performance which is a comment on how the once social activity of smoking has been transformed through regulation and legislation into something deeply anti-social. Agnieszka Kurant will present a trio of trained parrots that have been taught to use an alternative language. Cory Arcangel has intervened in the fair’s gallery selection process, giving one gallery unsuccessful in their application to this year’s fair the opportunity nonetheless to exhibit. Tue Greenfort will excavate a chamber between gallery stands presenting an installation that is both a space to relax in and – literally – a distillation of the essence of the visitors to the fair, with dehumidifiers imperceptibly extracting the moisture from those who enter. Further projects from Pavel Büchler, Ceal Floyer, Sharon Hayes, Bert Rodriguez, Allen Ruppersberg and Andreas Slominski are presented throughout the fair. This year’s European Partners are MUSAC from Spain who will provide the fair’s own mobile phone ringtone and Kling and Bang from Iceland who will reconstruct Rejkavik’s famous Sirkus bar, a favourite with artists and musicians, within the fair. Icelandic beer will be served. Frieze Projects are curated by Neville Wakefield and presented in association with Cartier.

Biennials and large-scale periodic exhibitions constitute a sizeable part of the production and distribution system of artistic products, an instrument of the economic strategy of the world-wide cultural industry, and a vehicle for the development of cities. Moreover, it has by now been observed that in order to produce discourse, one has to place oneself within the distribution system, as the production of discourse outside the distribution system – which would, however, have an impact within the system – appears to be a conceptual impossibility. At the same time, though, the inclusion of discourse in the system of distribution makes the discourse itself mutate to the point that its impact is exhausted. There is therefore a need for the creation of a space where the desire to produce discourse will co-exist alongside the pragmatic observation of the general difficulty to resist the system of distribution.

The Athens Biennial aims to function within an international network of large-scale periodic contemporary art events, while providing the framework and the support for a variety of approaches. Porting the notion of ‘biennial’ with a full realization of its content, in an international landscape full of various propositions, the Athens Biennial intends to function as an agent of change and innovation, as a platform for creativity and dialogue, and as an observatory, which will include the elements of contemplation and elaboration of collective issues.

Athens is an ideal location for the institution of such an observatory, as it does not seem to ever coincide with the ceaselessly shifting borders between centre and periphery, a fact which provides an oversight of both the centre and the periphery.

The Athens Biennial aims to be a constant mechanism for the designation and the critical engagement of local artistic production, as well as a forum of discussion and exchange with the international scene. Moreover, it aims to be both an agent of cohesion for the local visual arts community and a factor of attraction within the international cultural landscape. In fact, the Athens Biennial conceives of these elements as indivisible, and therefore has been designed from the beginning as a structure that fulfils two parallel functions:

Firstly, it organizes a biennial contemporary art exhibition of international appeal. Secondly, through implementing AB Projects, like the bilingual online magazine a. the athens contemporary art review and the online radio station artwave radio, organizing smaller exhibitions, events and conferences, publishing books, and collaborating with other initiatives, it provides opportunities for the development of artistic production and critical thought.

Art London is returning for its ninth year to a beautiful, airy marquee in Chelsea.

This year's fair welcomes 75 galleries from across the UK and Europe, and from as far afield as Argentina, South Africa, Australia and Hong Kong. These carefully selected exhibitors are showcasing their very best paintings, drawings, prints, photography, sculpture, glass and ceramics. In a relaxed setting that combines approachability with glamour and connoisseurship, you can find works by young unknowns as well as by household names.

Amongst the many established British artists represented at Art London are Alan Davie, Lynn Chadwick, Ivon Hitchens, Henry Moore, Ben Nicholson, Patrick Heron and Vanessa Bell. International greats include Pablo Picasso, Kurt Schwitters, Georg Baselitz, Eduard Vuillard and Raoul Dufy.

In 2006, Art London hosted its inaugural Special Exhibition: a non-selling, museum style show with an educational mission. Our second such exhibition is entitled Enabling the Future: Drawings, Maquettes and Sculptures from the Cass Sculpture Foundation. The collection has been on loan to several overseas museums, including the Guggenheim in Venice. However, this is the first time it is being exhibited- away from its permanent home at Goodwood- in a public space in the UK, a tremendous honour for Art London.

The Cass Sculpture Foundation is also contributing several major pieces to the fair's outdoor Sculpture Garden, a curated display of fourteen monumental works positioned against the idyllic backdrop of the Royal Hospital's grounds.

We are living in a time of global wars.

Most of these wars, conflicts and clashes take place in the developing world. The centre of the Empire has ruthlessly exported violence to other parts of the world. On the other hand, there is a difficulty faced by the developing world in enduring and suffering the challenging transition from decolonization, independence to modernization and globalization.

The Third World is a project by the non-western world to become independent after years of colonization, and to invent their own nation-states based on the principles of self-recognition, independence and equality. Modernization becomes the route towards such a goal, and multiple modernities provide the very ideological guidelines. Thus, the Third World is by definition a global project. To convince the masses of the importance of modernization as the only way for the Third World, the elite class has to resort to top-down models of imposing modernities and reforms that depend on the acceptance, cooperation and support of the �lower� classes, the military forces, and international aid. This imposition has often been violent and dictatorial, and people respond to the degeneration of their living conditions by protesting against the privileges of the dominant classes, reclaiming their social rights through mass mobilization and protestations against external and international agencies of liberal capitalist powers such as IMF and World Bank. These social mobilizations have also awakened some longtime �buried� conservative ideologies and values such as rightwing nationalism, ethnocentrism, racism and religious fundamentalism, and have allowed these groups to be �resurrected� and become popular within dramatic social vacuums.

The Third World is now facing a contradiction; it has become both a crisis and challenge to arrive at a �renaissance�. The key question is whether the non-western world can still reinvent effective models of modernization to face the challenges of globalization which are driven by liberal capitalism and dominated by Western powers.

Turkey, as one the of first non-western modern republics and a key player in the modernization of the developing world has proved to be one of the most radical, spectacular and influential cases in this direction. But, a fundamentally crucial problem is that the modernization model promoted by the Kemalist project was still a top-down imposition with some unsolvable contradictions and dilemmas inherent within the system: the quasi-military imposition of reforms, while necessary as a revolutionary tool, betrayed the principle of democracy; the nationalist ideology ran counter to its embracement of the universality of humanism, and the elite-led economic development generated social division. Populist political and religious forces have managed to recuperate and manipulate the claims from the �bottom� of the society and have used them to their own advantage.

In this age of global wars and globalization of liberal capitalism, it is not impossible but also necessary to revitalize the debate on modernization and modernity and put forward activist proposals to improve social progress. Today, modernization should be carried out in diverse models, relevant to local conditions and ideals, and in the negotiations between individual localities and the �global�. In other words, a bottom-up, truly democratic project of modernization and modernity that is based on the respect of individual rights and humanist values is necessary to bring Turkish society out of its contradiction. And this is also true of the global situation in transition.

Contemporary art has been a product of modernization and modernity. Along with globalization and the integration of many developing countries in the global system of production and communication, contemporary art is now being created and presented everywhere, far beyond the West.

Founded 20 years ago, the Istanbul Biennial should be understood as a part of the modernization project of Turkey in her search for both internal cultural development and international status. The Biennial has gained a certain maturity and is now facing the task of injecting new blood and reinventing itself as a forerunner in the creation of contemporary art.

In today�s geopolitical reality, it is necessary and urgent to deal with the question of modernization. Urbanization, or explosive urban expansion in the Istanbul fashion, is the most visible and significant sign of modernization. Exploring the urban and architectural conditions of Istanbul has hence become a starting point and a central reference to the conception of this Biennial. And contemporary art as an avant-garde in cultural experiments should engage with the city, and it is through this engagement that the biennial will acquire fresh energy and significance in a new reality. The biennial should become a laboratory for innovative projects and strategies, and a site for experiments and productions with different, multiple models of modernization.

To critically reexamine �the promise of modernity�, we have chosen some of the most significant modern edifices and venues including the AKM, İMÇ, Antrepo, santralistanbul and KAHEM. They symbolically and physically mirror the various facets and models of urban modernization in the city. In these sites, the utopian project of the republican revolution and modernization meets with the lively, ever-changing and �chaotic� reality, at once harmonious and conflicting. They are sites where the top-down vision of the modern city clashes with the bottom-up imaginations and actions promoting difference and hybridity.

In such a debate, artistic actions, including the Biennial itself, can certainly find their roles in prompting cultural and social changes through innovative forces of intervention -a form of the urban guerrilla. Facing this infinitely dynamic, complex and exciting reality of a metropolis, artists and other creators are highly inspired to mobilize their imaginations and creativities.

From the very beginning, the Biennial project has been clearly defined and structured beyond a conventional exhibition model. It embraced the rationale of merging it with the vibrancy of real urban life: from research to the development of the project; selection of venues and forms of actions and presentations in these sites; dialogues and collaborations among artists and other participants; spatial designs and their realizations through interventions and transformations of spaces; as well as defining communication strategies. It is a project of collective intelligence, reflecting perfectly the structure and function of the Multitude.

Spatially, the Biennial project will cover a wide range of urban zones, from theEuropean to the Asian sides, from the central areas to the peripheries. In terms of time, the project goes beyond a conventional �office-hour� presentation and takes on the reality of life in this sleepless city; it will function twenty-four hours a day continuously in different sites. With four major �exhibitions� and numerous special projects and parallel events, the Biennial is a dynamic complex system. It is an non-stop machine for production of new urban life. It is an endless urban maze.

From 25th May to 26th August 2007, the kestnergesellschaft, the Kunstverein Hannover, and the Sprengel Museum Hannover, will be presenting current positions in contemporary art from Germany in a major review exhibition. It focuses on the younger generation of artists of German and foreign origin who live and work chiefly in Germany. The selection of 52 artistic items for the exhibition makes no claim to completeness, preferring a paradigmatic provisional assessment. It is the outcome of nationwide selection process involving numerous visits to studios, intensive exchanges with artists and construction discussions on standpoints and works. The exhibition proclaims no national identity or the existence of genuinely “German art.” It attempts rather to demonstrate existing exchange processes at the economic, aesthetic, institutional, and intellectual levels, and shows the international dimension of the national. In a wide variety of ways, the participating artists succeed in expanding and modifying classical media. Their own aesthetic language combines different sources, images and information. They effortlessly mix present-day elements with well-known images from contemporary history long since entrenched in collective memory. And they draw on the rich fund of art history: modern art, the concept art of the 1960s and 1970s, minimal art, and currents of the 1980s. The artists submit the modern age to critical reflection, interrogating the relationship between private and public space, examining role patterns and their attribution, and are always on the lookout for a good story. Presentation has been distributed among the individual institutions in accordance with various criteria. The diversity of artistic media was to be demonstrated in all three institutions. Each “sub-exhibition” is also intended to be self-sufficient, with its own curatorial dramaturgy and both substantive and formal confrontations providing room for comparison and mutual reference. To attain the objectives of the exhibition, three key Hanoverian institutions in the field of contemporary and modern art, the Sprengel Museum Hannover, the kestnergesellschaft, and Kunstverein Hannover, have joined forces for the first time. Close cooperation on all aspects of planning and staging also underlines the openness and substantive breadth of the project.

The fourth international sculpture projects muenster opens in the summer of 2007. Since 1977 this large exhibition invites artists from all over the world to create new work in the city of Muenster. The events have put Muenster on the map of world renowned addresses for contemporary art.

sculpture projects muenster 07 opens on June 16, 2007 and runs parallel with the documenta in Kassel, from June 17 to September 30, 2007. For one hundred days, the exhibition will put its stamp on the city and the region. In 1997 more than 500.000 visitors came to Muenster to see the work of artists from 25 countries. This large attendance certainly raises similar expectations for 2007.

The curators Prof. Kasper König (Museum Ludwig, Cologne) and Dr. Brigitte Franzen (Westphalian State Museum, Muenster), and Associate Curator Dr. Carina Plath (Westphalian Art Association, Muenster) have invited 37 artists to participate in the exhibition.

The title of the exhibition, sculpture projects, is more than just a name: as in previous years, the artists participating in the 2007 exhibition will again examine the character of contemporary sculpture, its self-positioning in as well as its capacity to change the appearance of public space. As in 1977, 1987, and 1997, sculpture projects will examine the interdependence between the arts, the city, and the public. The sculptures will be created mostly in Muenster and installed throughout the city. By incorporating the works of art, the city gradually changes its face – a dynamic process is set in motion.

Now in its third year, PRAGUEBIENNALE re-launches itself once more. Through a vast display of both recent and past works (from painting and photography to performance and installation art) this year's edition aims to explore and pinpoint the most significant aspects of Central European art. The show displays works by artists young and old, new and affirmed, as well as covering the very movements that shaped the sixties and seventies. Special exhibitions have been dedicated to Czech minimalism and Slovak actionism, which, hitherto, have not been documented on an international level. Following upon the success new artists have achieved after participating in 'Expanded Painting' (PRAGUEBIENNALE veritably 'baptised' or, so to speak, 'consecrated' Andro Wekua, Matthias Weischer, Dana Schutz, Tal R, Victor Man and Wilhelm Sasnal), Expanded Painting 2, will present twenty emerging European artists. There will be a special focus on the 'School of Cluj' in Romania, which, after Leipzig and Dresden, is proving to be a veritable goldmine of contemporary painters. Moreover, the fair pays homage to three seminal artists: Above all, however, the true stars of PRAGUEBIENNALE3 are indeed the very cultures and minor stories of Central Europe.

During the eleven years of its existence ART MOSCOW has proved itself to be the most effective market ground of contemporary art on the Russia’s art scene that affords maximum opportunity for implementing cultural and commercial ideas. The success of ART MOSCOW arises from its professional adequacy to the present moment of development of modern culture in Russia. ART MOSCOW Fair is the place where one can not only get acquainted with art trends of current interest but also invest capital to one’s advantage. The high quality level of gallery expositions at the fair is a result of the work of the Expert Council bringing together leading Russian and foreign owners of galleries, theoreticians and art historians. The Zone of the Young is represented by such galleries as ZEH and Kiev Fine Art (Kiev, Ukraine), as well as Glance (Turin, Italy), RX and Studio MAC (Paris, France). ART MOSCOW is coming up to the world level as regards organizing various arrangements around the main event such as presentations, discussions and informal meetings making a comfortable and creative milieu that contributes to exchanging experience and working out plans for the future. Traditionally, the fair lays stress not only on commercial issues but also performs as a Kulturträger. Year by year, its non-commercial projects are gaining in weight and qualify for museum quality. In 2007, a vast program of accompanying art events will be carried out as a part of the fair. Based on international experience ART MOSCOW starts a new project for works that have the size or technical implementation not suitable to be exhibited in the stalls of the art fair. «Non Format» Project is to change the routine of exhibiting works of art exclusively in the stalls and offers an alternative platform for their demonstration to the galleries. The 2007 fair’s program includes a set of lectures on investments into the art; a personal exposition of the winners of Black Square, a national modern art award; an exhibition from the private collection of Alexandr Smuzikov; a program of performances of French artist Tristan Favre and Russian artists Ivan Razumov and Dmitry Fine. In the frame of ART MOSCOW art fair they have planned a number of dedicated events (read more on them in the fair’s program), as well as exhibitions and special projects.

Kommunalka (Shared Appartments). Seven famous Russian artists will share one apartment during the work of the fair. Living together they will have to fulfill a series of incentive tasks targeted at releasing their creative resources and liberating them as individuals. For several days they will be “cut off from the world” in the Central House of Artists, the most appropriate space for artists. As in any other self-esteemed reality-show they will be visited by famous guests, and every day the stringent jury (including guests of the fair) will come to a decision “who of the inhabitants must leave the project.”

Shargorod. The First Landing. The exhibition shows selected works of the art created during the Art-Mestechko/Shargorod International Festival of Modern Art that was held in a small provincial town Shargorod in the Ukraine in August 2006. The Festival was interesting first and foremost as regards its genre that could be named as “the art descent genre.” It had a new and interesting form of a street festival incidentally making the town citizens both spectators and subjects of modern art. From this point of view the phenomenon of the Shargorod Festival went far beyond familiar and dull “field exhibition” practice and became the manifestation of a new variant or rather a new format of public art becoming a bold attempt to comprehend and express the substance of the provincial town milieu the popular capital art is unfamiliar with.

Igor’s Mania. Glyuklya and Tsaplya. The Found Clothes Factory. In 2007, Glyuklya and Tsaplya, women artists from Saint Petersburg and participants in the Factory of Found Clothes Project, became winners of the Black Square, a national modern art award. Their film “Three Mothers and Children's Choir” cut to the hearts of the most jury members. The art of TV “documentality”, that has successfully disarmed not to say eliminated quite a number of works of art in recent years, was overcome for the benefit of high theatricality and thanks to that art survived in this case. In Igor’s Mania, their new project, that Glyuklya and Tsaplya present at ART MOSCOW; the artists continue to work with the art of “documentality”. Glyuklya and Tsaplya say: “This exhibition is a portrait of aberration. The aberration that there is no equality in relations among people. If there is no understanding there is no pleasure in recognizing ourselves in other people, there is no pleasure of understanding that we are different, there is no justice and there is no love. Such a nightmare comes from time to time to all of us living on earth when we hide ourselves in the corner, lock our room and then it becomes impossible to move to eternal life.” Beyond the Sound. This project is the result of artist Yuri Kalendarev’s work with “granite, environmental art and light projects - Sound Plates. The visual effect of the sculpture becomes in this project an insignificant aspect compared with the "hidden voice"of the reverberant sculpture. In a sense these sounding sculptures are just “devices” to listen to silence. Their substance transcends the Sound and people cooperating with them broaden their consciousness.” And Just Enjoy Being/Meat. Installations and performances of French artist Tristan Favre and Russian artists Ivan Razumov and Dmitry Fine are an interaction of the sculpture composition and the sound. Tristan Favre’s project is a composition with a hundred plates illustrating mass culture in France. The plates are very well suited to demonstrate likes and dislikes of particular society. They are also used to preserve the precious image because of their decorative style and historical aspect, they depict political views and they are souvenirs keeping reminiscences as well.

From April 19th until May 26th 2007 the exhibition „was einmal über heute gesagt werden wird: KölnShow2“ („...what will be told of today tomorrow: KölnShow2“) will take place in 18 contemporary art galleries in Cologne.

The constitutional concept of the exhibition, curated by Nicolaus Schafhausen and Florian Waldvogel, ties up to „The Köln Show“ in 1990, a so far unique joint venture of nine Cologne based galeries. They organised an exhibition with at that point unknown artist, many of them having their names in the art world today.

In the 1980s and early-90s, the city of Cologne was one of the most important centres for contemporary art in Europe. With its many galleries, artist run-spaces, and artist bars, the city assumed a kind of mythological dimension, a place where artists came to show, sell, socialize, and distinguish themselves and their work on levels symbolic and real, depending on the conditions of the urban surrounding. „The Köln Show“ examined, consciously without institutional help, the specific relationship between art production, art scene and artmarket in Cologne in 1990.

Aiming at a future-orientated new foundation of a Kunsthalle in Cologne, the European Kunsthalle takes this now almost historical venture up. As one of the last projects of the European Kunsthalle during its two-year founding and research process, the exhibition „KölnShow2“ approaches directly the cultural activities of the city of Cologne. The exhibition presents a selection of the young international art scene in the spaces of the participating galleries, parallel to their own program. Using the temporal distance from the year 2007 to „The Köln Show“ in 1990, the exhibition reflects on contemporary general frameworks of cultural prosperity and artistic production in Cologne.

Rounding up the two-year founding phase the European Kunsthalle focuses on its actual position and departing point in Cologne. Departing from the analysis of the cultural infrastructure of urban communities, it is considered essential for the research to examine the network of galleries and art mediators as an important factor of a cultural habitat and their current potential. Utilising the spaces and possibilities of the galleries, the exhibition project asks which significance is taken up by them within artistic discourse. Which structural changes occurred and may be read from the resultant development from 1990 until today?

The Floating Lab Collective will be performing Protest on Demand as part of the Multimediale Festival of Art, Politics and New Media taking place in Washington DC April 19-22. The artists will disperse into groups of four teams: Green, Blue, Orange, and Red (based on the Metro subway system colors) and will be indentifiable by their color-coded jumpsuits.

The protests are being staged in 4 locations in the DC area. Each group involves 4 artists, and each artist will accomplish a specific task, from engaging the public to documenting the protest. Each team will take requests for protests from bystanders and from the floating lab web site: www.floatinglabcollective.org This webpage is currently accessible for initiating protests for use during the performance. Each group will create placards and slogans with the protest initiator or promoter if they are present. The remote initiator or promoter will receive feedback through the Internet.

Each protest will be held for 3 minutes and it could be about anything. The content of the protests will be provided by anyone that wants to voice a concern. The webpage creates the possibility for collection of national and international concerns and points that people would like to voice in one of the most influential political locations in the world--Washington DC. The main idea is to create a platform to voice concerns from a variety of people.

The 4 groups on the street will be linked to the gallery (the floating office) through messengers, who will be collecting the documentation hourly, in the form of video, digital photo, sound recording, and the log of the project. This “floating office” will be composed of 4 artists. The “floating office” will have a printer and computers to edit. They will continually be updating the web page.

The documentation will continually be posted and displayed in the gallery, with video projectors and prints. The work will be constantly shifting and evolving during the execution of the performance, to amplify the idea of urgency, immediacy and overall importance.

In 2007, the world’s longest-established fair for modern and contemporary art moves into the spring and will take place at the Cologne exhibition center from 18th to 22nd April.

The field of exhibitors includes many internationally renowned galleries. The exhibitors’ stands will present a comprehensive overview of the art of the 20th and 21st centuries — from modernism to the most recent works by contemporary artists. In addition to important works from the post-war period, the exhibitors are increasingly focusing on contemporary art. An integral feature of ART COLOGNE is “Open Space”, a curated outdoor sale exhibition area for contemporary art.

ART COLOGNE reflects an awareness of its traditions, which include in particular the promotion of new art and young artists:

-the work of young artists is promoted by the “New Talents” programme, which is supported by the Federal Commissioner for Cultural and Media Affairs, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the City of Cologne and Koelnmesse. A jury will select the “Best of the Best”, and the winner will be honoured with the ART COLOGNE Young Artist Prize, which was presented for the first time in 2005.

-the “New Contemporaries” programme, which is sponsored by the SK Culture Foundation of the Sparkasse KölnBonn, promotes new galleries. The programme allows galleries to take part in ART COLOGNE at reasonable prices.

Supporting and promoting new art and young artists isn’t the only high priority at ART COLOGNE, however. Beginning this year, the fair’s commitment to the entire international art market will be underlined by “Hidden Treasures”, which will be an annual programme intended to introduce as many as six artists who are 40 or older. These “hidden treasures” will be artists whose place on the art market has not yet stabilised , although their work is relevant and important from an art historical standpoint: In short, desirable art at rather attractive prices.

Koelnmesse will be investing in the infrastructure of ART COLOGNE for the benefit of exhibitors and visitors over the next years. Enhancements will be made to the technical and other facilities in the exhibition halls, and to the trade fair catering. Destricted is the first short film collection of its kind, bringing together sex and art in a series of short films created by some of the world’s most visual and provocative artists and directors. Explicit in content they reveal the diverse attitudes by which we represent ourselves sexually. Formed in 2004, Destricted is a platform for all forms of uncensored artistic expression; manipulating and embracing the expression of sex through art.

The seven films presented explore the fine line where art and pornography intersect. The films highlight controversial issues about the representation of sexuality in art; opening up for debate the question of whether art can be disguised as pornography or whether pornography can be disguised as art or something else altogether. Red, erotic, carnal, halfway between glamour and cannibalism : this is how the mouth with its impeccable white teeth filling the screen of the monitor shows itself. This work by video artist Lia Anna Hennig, who lives in England, is one of the fifty exhibits presented at the VIDEONALE between 15 March and 15 April 2007 in the Kunstmuseum Bonn. Besides the latest video creations of/by artists such as Jeanne Faust, Christoph Girardet or Mischa Kuball, the exhibition also presents works by young artists like the Japanese Hideyuki Tanaka, who shows the strange rites surrounding a godlike figure called Jappy, or French artist Jean- Gabriel Périot, who investigated the public punishment of French women accused of having affairs with German soldiers during World War 2. "We want to show the whole spectrum of video art today. Above all, we are interested in the appeal of the contemporary. What we particularly notice is the enormous variety of the works submitted: Narrative and documentary items, clips, animated films and cartoons, political videos, works of purely formal character, performance-videos. A particularly interesting trend this year is the number of videos by artists with a migratory background: Never before did we receive so many works by artists whose names, at first glance, do not fit the countries in which they live" says Georg Elben, curator of VIDEONALE 11. Art Rotterdam 2007 is the show in the area of topical, contemporary art and is being held for the eighth time in the Cruise Terminal, in the ‘Kop van Zuid’ quarter of Rotterdam, from 8 to 12 February. Some 73 galleries from ten different countries have been chosen for their mental attitude, quality and urge towards renewal. Art Rotterdam has now gained a permanent position among other trendsetting, international art fairs. This year’s theme is “art on the periphery”. The Witte de With Centre for Contemporary Art – under the direction of Nicolaus Schafhausen – is organising a three-day symposium entitled The Periphery Complex. In addition, there is a collaboration with Atelier Rijksbouwmeester. They have invited the American art group Graffiti Research Lab (GRL) for a special art project during Art Rotterdam. The Asia–Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT) is the Queensland Art Gallery’s flagship international contemporary art event. Established in 1993, it is the only major series of exhibitions in the world to focus exclusively on the contemporary art of Asia and the Pacific, including Australia.

The fifth APT (APT5) will be the opening exhibition at the new Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) — the Queensland Art Gallery’s much-anticipated second building, which will be the largest gallery of modern art in Australia. The contemporary art exhibition at the third Busan Biennale is "A Tale of Two Cities: Busan-Seoul / Seoul-Busan," organized by independent curator Manu D. Park and sited at the Busan Museum of Modern Art, the Busan Yachting Center and the capital region exhibition hall. The biennale's "Sea Art Festival," organized by Germany-based independent curator Byoung-Hak Ry and installed at the South Korean port city's waterfront, includes three shows: "Public Furniture," "Living Furniture" and "Sand Art." With the support of Gordon's ® gin this year's prize fund is £40,000 with £25,000 going to the winner and £5,000 each for the other shortlisted artists. The Prize, established in 1984, is awarded to a British artist under fifty for an outstanding exhibition or other presentation of their work in the twelve months preceding 9 May 2006. It is intended to promote public discussion of new developments in contemporary British art and is widely recognised as one of the most important and prestigious awards for the visual arts in Europe.

Work by the shortlisted artists will be shown in an exhibition at Tate Britain beginning on 3 October 2006. The winner will be announced at Tate Britain on 4 December during a live broadcast by Channel 4.

Rhizome celebrates Tenth Anniversary with Festival in New York and online

From August 2006 through February 2007, Rhizome will present a number of innovative exhibits, performances, discussions, and online projects throughout New York and elsewhere, in celebration of ten years of leadership in the new media arts field. This ambitious slate of programs will honor the vibrancy, diversity, and strength of this growing field and will provide an opportunity to connect with new media art both online and offline.

Rhizome was initiated in 1996 as an online platform for the global new media art community. At that time, the organization’s focus was primarily upon Internet art. Ten years later, Rhizome retains this focus and has also grown to support a wide range of art that engage emerging technologies—including sound art, locative media, digital video, software art, and modifications of video games. As the Internet and other computing technologies have come to play a more prevalent role in culture, Rhizome has supported artists’ expanded involvement with these tools and materials. The anniversary festival provides a touchstone moment to celebrate new media art and look forward to further advancements in the field.

FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS include collaborations with a number of organizations committed to supporting new media, including Rhizome’s affiliate, the New Museum of Contemporary Art, and also the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, The Kitchen, the Vera List Center, ISEA, and Foxy Production.

Rhizome and the New Museum will co-present Time Shares, a series of nine Internet-based exhibitions on themes ranging from globalization to pop culture to site-specific works in the popular online game space, Second Life. An exhibition of the eleven compelling Internet-based art works commissioned by Rhizome in 06-07 will also be included.

This Fall, The Kitchen will host a night of Internet-related performances, the Vera List Center will host a discussion about open source issues, and the Guggenheim will be the venue for two media activists’ performative lectures. In February, an exhibition at Foxy Production gallery will look at the relationship between nature and technology. The international group of artists included in these programs includes some of today’s most engaged practitioners, such as Young Hae Chang/ Heavy Industries (Hong Kong), Olia Lialina (Moscow), JODI.org (Rotterdam), Jacob Ciocci (Pittsburgh), the Yes Men (Glasgow/ Paris), Ze Frank (NY), Ricardo Miranda Zuniga (Mexico City/ NY), and the Raqs Media Collective (Delhi).

Considering Rhizome’s origin as an email list, Rhizome has always been a catalyst for discourse. During the festival, Rhizome and the New Museum of Contemporary Art will continue to collaborate on a new series of book releases, entitled Celebrating New Media Scholarship, three of which have already drawn very large audiences. Additionally, an online collaborative writing project, entitled Keylines, will provide a site for active discussion of issues relevant to new media and culture at large, including the environment, feminism, protest, and art historical questions. Letteri has pioneered and developed many of the digital techniques that have become the standard in bringing photographic quality to high-end visual effects. Four headless figures will be placed on Potsdamer Platz for five weeks, operating as video terminals of sorts. They reflect the position of people on Potsdamer Platz. As headless figures, the terminals’ exterior makes them seem outsiders and eccentrics. They become a game that passers-by play with themselves. The transition from interiority to exteriority, from the private to the public, is reflected within the figures and without, in the façade of light: it turns matters on their head. The headless figures are home to our past. This past is signified by videos of historical events that are shown on monitors installed inside the headless figures.

Pushing a button starts the video and, at the same time, takes pictures of the observer. The faces in the now that are collected this way merge with the historical footage on the façade into a moment both present and past. The city’s pulse acts as the animation’s metronome. Each individual becomes a part of something new, some- thing larger, at times invisible. It is this that the façade makes visible. And it reminds us of the many layers we carry within our selves and reveals that every moment carries all times in it. At the blink of an eye, at the stroke of a metronome, the specific becomes indistinct and dissolves into the whole.

The Endless Forest

The Endless Forest is a social screensaver, a virtual place where you can play with your friends. When your computer goes to sleep you appear as a deer in this magical place. There are no goals to achieve or rules to follow. You just steer your deer through the forest and see what happens. Currently The Endless Forest consists of a forest, a mysterious ruin, a lovely pond and as many deer as there are players at any given time. You can play the game anonymously but we encourage you to name your deer so other players can recognize you. Although not goal-oriented, there are several activities that you can engage in. Nothing very demanding or violent. Just fun things to do in a nice environment. Once every so often, the forest deities will appear, either in person or through their divine powers. Beware of falling rocks and sudden showers! Over the course of the following years, we will add many things to The Endless Forest. Some may indeed be slightly game-like while others simply pretty or poetic. For an idea of our general plans, look here. Architecture of Density Michael Wolf

Michael Wolf was born in Munich, Germany. He grew up in the USA and studied at UC Berkley and at the University of Essen in Germany. He has been living and working as a photographer and author in China for ten years.

In addition to a wide spectrum of publications for international magazines, three books by him on China have been published to date: "Sitting in China” (published by Steidl, 2002) and "China im Wandel” (published by Frederking und Thaler,2001). Recently, Taschen published his documentation of the shaping of public politics and opinion making comprising his extensive collection of Chinese propaganda posters.

Wolf has been intensively concerned with the topic of vernacular culture for many years. His most recent work deals with the issue of the cultural identity of the city of Hong Kong. The exhibition "Architecture of Density" shown in New York in Febuary 2004 is a part of Michael Wolfs recent Hongkong project.

Keeping it Kriel. Dr Charles Kriel (aka DVJ Kriel) was born to an American circus family, and spent his childhood traveling North America in make-up and big shoes.

Kriel is now an artist, producer and DVJ based in London. He is also the United Nations World Summit Awards National Expert in New Media. His first book, How to DVJ - a Digital DJ Masterclass, is published by MIM Press. It is the first book to address digital DJ and VJ technologies.
In 2000, Kriel was appointed Artist-in-Residence at BBC Radio 1, collaborating with Pete Tong to create the world’s first weekly VJ stream for the web. He went on to pioneer the first live nationally telecast DVJ mix for BBC Three / BBCi as part of Glastonbury 2004, the same year he became the first Pioneer ProDVJ. The NME named him the world’s leading VJ; he has featured in DJ Mag’s Top 20, and was recently billed "the world’s first superstar VJ" by The Times. As a DVJ, he cut his teeth on the UK’s major dance festivals, and these days you’ll find him driving dirty dancefloors from Detroit to Ibiza to St. Petersburg.As a visual artist, Kriel has exhibited globally. His work has included installations and performances at the Venice Biennale, Tate Britain, the Royal Festival Hall and at gallery of Tomato Design (that’s the band Underworld).Visit the site.

Off / Fóra, the 29th Pontevedra Art Biennial, to take place between July 13 and September 3, 2006 in Pontevedra, Spain. Curated by the Argentine Victoria Noorthoorn, the Biennial includes 29 artists from Argentina, Chile, Galicia and Uruguay that explore the phenomena of emigration, mobility and difference today. It will be the first European Biennial to give Latin America, and, specifically the Southern Cone, such a central position.

Off / Fóra, explores emigration as a global, sociological, historical, cultural, and psychological phenomenon.
Off / Fóra considers the four participating countries as representatives of the problems of the contemporary being in a transnational market where the migrant plays a central role.
Off / Fóra delves into the question of how feelings of belonging, roots and place are constituted, and how ideas of nation, identity and tradition are problematized. These questions are explored from a wide perspective where the concept of identification is permanently re-constructed, and the stereotype challenged.
Off / Fóra explores the situation of the migrant or the exile, on the basis of the notion of the artist as a political figure and symbolic analyst of domains, ideas, forms, and languages.
Off / Fóra considers imagination of vital power for the subject; as it allows him to project change, to consider the possibility of migrating, and to visualize the existence of a different world for the future.
Off / Fóra proposes a crossing of boundaries, where the artist takes the limit as a place of debate and extends the frontiers of his own practice. One of the strategies to effect this leap is fiction, understood as an imaginary journey.
Off / Fóra establishes a dialogue in space that privileges resonance, echo, and disturbance over the refuge offered by narrative coherence or nationality.

This theme is the common denominator of a feature-packed calendar of events, conferences, symposia, exhibitions and performances that will comprehensively showcase the state of the art of global media culture. The program that’s been lined up for Ars Electronica 2006 is a multifaceted encounter with possibilities and strategies designed to help us effectively manage the increasingly multi-layered complexity of our reality. “If we succeed in dealing with complexity in a constructive way and taking advantage of it, then this phenomenon that is increasingly dominating all aspects of our life opens up tremendous prospects for our future,” stated Ars Electronica Artistic Director Gerfried Stocker. “Coming up with intelligent, easy-to-use solutions for complicated, multidimensional tasks is currently the most pressing task that we face. That goes for information technology just as much as it applies to art and other facets of life in our society,” Christine Schöpf pointed out in stressing the importance of this year's Festival theme. Christine Schöpf and Gerfried Stocker are co-directors of Ars Electronica. Implementing new technologies, digital ones included, always entails social consequences that have to be taken into consideration. Among the pressing questions we face: How can computer programs be designed so as to minimize the obstacles that prevent individuals from accessing them? How can we more accurately grasp the concrete social impact of new technologies? What qualities must hardware possess in order to provide everyone—and not just the technocratic elite—with access to it? How can we take optimal advantage of the opportunities that complexity presents in order to identify that which is essential for us in the flood of information with which we are deluged? And what role does art play in its function as avant-garde domain and field of experimentation amidst constantly multiplying data, more and more options and permanent change?
